What is PTSD & How Can EMDR Therapy Help?

After a traumatic experience, our bodies and brains store intrusive thoughts and unwanted memories in a “trauma mode” that helps us survive. Therapy can help reorganize those thoughts in a way that allows you to see them as events from the past rather than a defining part of who you are. EMDR therapy is an integrative approach to treating PTSD that considers your mind, body, and soul in the process.

If you are experiencing:

Flashbacks & nightmares

Hypervigilance

Insomnia

Dissociation

Feeling overwhelmed

Guilt or shame

Persistent worry or fears

Feeling stuck in place

Intrusive memories

Ruminating thoughts

EMDR therapy can help you regain a sense of control and well-being in your life.

How EMDR Therapy Works

EMDR therapy follows 8 distinct steps. However, because each person and experience is different, we will follow the steps at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

1

History Taking

In this initial phase, the therapist gathers information about your history, trauma experiences, and current symptoms. Together, we develop a treatment plan outlining the targets for EMDR therapy.

2

Preparation

We take the time to walk you through the EMDR therapy process and teach relaxation and grounding techniques to help you find your mental “safe space” and cope with distressing emotions that may arise during the sessions.

3

History Taking

We work to identify specific memories or experiences to target in EMDR therapy, based on their relevance to your symptoms and treatment goals.

4

Desensitization

This phase involves reprocessing the targeted memories by having you focus on the memory while tracking a bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, auditory tones, or tactile sensations.

5

Installation

Positive beliefs and self-statements related to the targeted memory are identified and strengthened during this phase. We'll help you to find positive beliefs to replace negative ones, helping you feel more empowered and resilient.

6

Body Scan

We take some time to notice any residual tension or discomfort in your body associated with the targeted memory and release physical tension to achieve a state of relaxation.

7

Closure

At the end of each session, we ensure that you feel grounded and stable before concluding our time together. We also provide you with coping strategies to manage any emotions or sensations that may arise between sessions.

8

Re-evaluation

In subsequent sessions, we reassess your progress and identify any additional targets for EMDR therapy. This iterative process continues until your trauma-related symptoms and experience relief from distress.

Questions About PTSD & EMDR Therapy

Commonly Asked Questions

EMDR therapy helps you deal with difficult memories and experiences by organizing them into a more manageable space, leading to feeling less stressed, fewer PTSD symptoms, and better mental health overall.
If you’ve experienced a traumatic event and are having intrusive memories, flashbacks, avoidance of trauma reminders, negative changes in mood and cognition, and hyperarousal, you might have PTSD. If you’re unsure, book a consultation and we can help you figure out what you need.
Yes, EMDR therapy has been found to be effective in treating not only PTSD but also other anxiety-related disorders, including stress and panic attacks by helping you process the underlying memories and beliefs contributing to your anxiety symptoms.
In an EMDR session, you’ll work closely with your therapist to identify the memories or triggers that are causing distress. You’ll then follow their hand movements or listen to sounds while thinking about these memories. This helps separate the emotions that are “stuck” to the memory and restructures it into something more manageable.
The time it takes for EMDR therapy varies. It depends on how severe your symptoms are, how many difficult experiences you’ve had, and how well you respond to treatment. It can take several sessions to a few months. Most people start feeling better within a few sessions. Your therapist will make a plan that fits your needs and goals.

Outcomes of EMDR Therapy For PTSD

What You Can Expect

Every person and therapeutic journey is unique, and we can’t guarantee specific results or a specific timeframe, but you may notice that over time you have:

An increased sense of safety and control in your life

By working together to process traumatic memories, you’ll experience fewer triggers and feel more empowered in your daily life.

Addressing the underlying trauma contributing to your sleep difficulties can help you overcome insomnia and restless sleep often associated with PTSD.

By exploring your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors together, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of who you are and develop more self-compassion.

EMDR rewires the brain’s response to traumatic memories, allowing you to move forward without being weighed down by your past experiences.

Because EMDR therapy addresses trauma at its core, you can experience transformative change on emotional, cognitive, and neurological levels.

By working through and making sense of your difficult experiences, you’ll find the strength to move forward and create a happier life.
